Great class as usual. Feel so good after that wonderful eccentrics movement.  Just wanted to apologize for not saying goodbye.  After I'm all relaxed and stretched out I'm feeling real mellow and want to do some quiet meditation so I just shut my computer when you all went to stand up.

  Although I’ve always been active, my exercise routine has been  a rather  on and off affair of various activities. Thanks to you I have for the  first time engaged in a consistent exercise program that has made a huge  difference in my life. I feel stronger and more physically capable than  ever before.

I am doing a “Virtual Fitness Class” with a trainer from AZ,  and I want to share her website with friends in case anyone is looking for something like this  while we stay safer at home. Betsy Dyson is a certified trainer who lives in AZ.  Once you sign up for a class, she is available on Wednesdays for appointments about special issues or questions, plus personal chat times on zoom. I feel like I have my own  personal

trainer in my home, and I get to connect with friends every week - as I stay home.

 Get creative with your workout! This class puts a new twist on your  exercise routine. It is a great way to be kept moving and trying fun ways to use a weighted hula hoop. The 30-minute workout flies by (and  sometimes so does your hoop!).

I have been enrolled in Betsy Dyson’s Fit Over Fifty class for about seven months now., I just absolutely love her class. Betsy is a wonderful instructor and really knows fitness! The class is geared toward those of us over 50 and many of us have physical issues of some sort or another. Betsy is very cognizant of this and is always able to show us alternative ways of doing the exercises. We are able to ‘go at our own pace.’ Betsy also focuses on posture, balance and stabilization –things a lot of us, as we get older, need help with. In addition, due to the sense of camaraderie that Betsy fosters in class, all of the women feel like friends to me. There is never any judgement in Betsy’s class—only support of each other!

I’ve always been active but at age 59 I have more than a few physical limitations due to injuries, (many) surgeries and yes even age.  I’m able to walk, bike and hike regularly and consider myself “fairly” fit.  Still I was looking for something that would help me with a more well-rounded approach to fitness – and help me continue to be fit as I get older (because sometimes it does seem to get harder). 

So I signed up for one of Betsy Dyson’s “Fit over 50” classes at my local rec center.  It was twice a week for 4 weeks and I figured I’d maybe learn a couple of new exercises or something.  I was wrong – I learned far more than that AND I had fun doing it. 

I learned that “moving” (in the right ways) is exercise, it doesn’t have to hurt, and it doesn’t have to be boring.  Betsy’s approach is to switch things up to keep things fresh, to concentrate on doing movement correctly, on working your brain as well as your body, on providing encouragement for what you can do and accommodating individual needs, pushing you to not get complacent and to keep trying to get better, and perhaps most importantly, to enjoy yourself while you’re doing that.

I’m now in my 6th consecutive month of Betsy’s class – as are several others that have discovered how helpful her class is – and how much of a “community” she builds with her participants.  Could I do some of the exercises on my own at home – sure – and maybe at some point if Betsy’s stopped teaching the class that’s what I’d have to fall back on (but I’ve already tried on some of the off “holiday” weeks and it doesn’t work too well!).  At least I’d have learned a lot about “moving” instead of just “exercising”.  For now, I know I wouldn’t be as motivated to do it on my own, and I’d miss the camaraderie that she’s built in the class and that we all enjoy.  I also know that I’ve noticed an incredible difference in my “core” strength, my posture, my overall body fitness and my balance – not just when I’m hiking steep and rocky trails here in Arizona but in everyday activities.

Betsy is outstanding at working with individual limitations but also helps you realize any you can learn to overcome.  She’s at all times positive and encouraging – but doesn’t let you slide into bad habits or get lazy.  She creates an atmosphere where everyone, regardless of their abilities, feels welcome and included – to the point that many of us have branched out to doing activities together outside of class.

The older we get, the more we need to keep moving and to stay balanced.  If you think exercise is too hard and/or too boring , or that you’re already in “pretty good” shape and wouldn’t benefit much from something like a “Fit over 50” class , or that perhaps you’re not even in “good enough shape” to try to start “moving” – think again.  Betsy can and will dispel every one of those excuses – and you’ll be so glad that you started moving!

I had no idea what I’d be getting into when I signed up for the “fit
over fifties” class.  I just figured it would be good to get some kind
of exercise in other than the cardio I get when I ride my bike or hike. 
I didn’t know that a class could be so fun and good for you!  Betsy has
been great at creating a diverse number of exercises in the circuit that
will benefit each person and work towards making the aging process
easier and healthier.  There’s a lot of balancing, core exercises, and
working on getting your brain engaged in the workout.  Betsy does a
great job in figuring out an exercise that will benefit you if there is
one in the circuit that day that you are unable to do because of a
physical problem (bad knee, bad back, hurt wrist…).   She changes up the
exercise so they don’t get boring.

I’ve definitely seen an improvement in my balance, my core, and the
ability to walk backwards quickly without a fear of falling down.  It’s
helped a lot with my hiking and being able to balance on rocks, step up
on and over rocks, and being more steady of a hiker.

One big benefit of this class is the social aspect.  Betsy sets up the
class to be fun and not a drudge which makes for a friendly and
supporting bunch of people.  We exercise together, laugh together, and
encourage each other.  I don’t think you could ask for more!
